Beware! The National Day of Hate
With our memories still fresh from ‘The Unite The Right' rally in 2017, attention now turns to the upcoming ‘National Day Of Hate’ and white-supremacy movements globally.
‘The Unite The Right Rally’, shocked both the USA and the world in August 2017, and left the public with vivid and lasting images of white supremacists brandishing flaming torches and shouting that the ‘Jews will not replace us’ through the streets of Charlottesville, Virginia (USA).
Now, our attention turns once more to various parts of the USA and other cities around the world as we anticipate race-based community unrest ahead of protests, rallies and possible violence during ‘The National Day of Hate’.
According to The New York Post, a leaked internal memo from the New York Police Department’s Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureau warns of possible extremist activity and violence against certain communities by white supremacist groups over the weekend. Excerpts from the leaked document state that although there were “no identified threats to New York City”, the law enforcement agency urged their staff to be on high-alert for possible demonstrations and acts of violence.
“…. out of an abundance of caution, the Department will deploy additional resources to sensitive locations, including houses of worship, throughout the weekend. We urge all New Yorkers to remain vigilant, and if you see anything suspicious, please call 1-888–NYC-SAFE.”
When analysing the prevailing ‘chatter’ across the internet, the group thought to be the main would-be-perpetrators of possible violence against the Jewish community and ‘people of colour’ in general, seems to be the National Socialist Movement. However, according to the ‘think-tank’, Countering Extremism Project (CEP), there are at least three other other groups widely speculated to pose as possible threats over the next few days. .
National Socialist Movement
According to research conducted by the CEP, The National Socialist Movement (NSM) is a prominent neo-Nazi group that has directed extremist, incendiary rhetoric toward Jews and other minorities. This group self-describes as "America's premier white civil rights organization…” and they have previously stated that their aim is to bring about the "the union of all Whites into a greater America on the basis of the right of national self-determination."
Concern regarding this group has also been raised by the The Southern Poverty Law Center who identify the National Socialist Movement as the largest neo-Nazi movement in the United States.
Officially, the National Socialist Movement rejects that they employ violence to bring about their political and ideological aims, but closely align themselves to the philosophies of Adolf Hitler and believe that his views can be applied to many countries globally.
Their website states that membership to the group is open to ‘non-Semitic heterosexuals of genetic European descent,’ and that their ‘white family-friendly policies’ are rooted in their “core beliefs (which) include defending the rights of White European people (and) the diaspora of Europe found everywhere” :
We work toward the preservation of our European culture and heritage, strengthening our family values, encouraging economic self-sufficiency, the reform of illegal immigration policies, the immediate withdrawal of our national military from an illegal Middle Eastern occupation and the promotion of White racial separation.
Recent posts on Telegram call for street demonstrations, rallies and marches across the USA to draw further attention to their belief that the white-race faces extinction through race mixing and targeted violence. They are also hoping to promote the idea that the mainstream media is dominated by Jews and convince like-minded individuals that this is a threat to the propagation of the white-race.
Encrypted Messaging Platforms
“Telegram (an online messaging app )is the main online organising point for the extreme right to recruit and organize coordinated hate events throughout the U.S., footage from which can be used in future propaganda videos,” said CEP researcher Joshua Fisher-Birch. “Tech platforms, especially Telegram, are too often neglecting their responsibility to protect public safety and have allowed these groups to have an online presence, plan events, and grow.”
Telegram is a cloud-based mobile and desktop messaging app which describes itself as having a focus on security and speed, but is most notable for the privacy it provides users through its encryption technology. The use of this service and the number of chat-groups within Telegram has grown exponentially since its launch in 2013. Telegram is free and users can chat, share video and other content secretly within a wide variety of community or interest groups.
Telegram Usage Numbers
Along with other popular apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram is proving to be a major challenge for law enforcement and security agencies globally who are not able to easily monitor the activities of extremist or terrorist groups and unable to access crucial information required to mitigate threats to the public.
Jewish Community Response | #ShabbatOfPeaceNotHate
Unsurprisingly, Jewish communities across the USA have sounded the alarm by issuing warnings to their networks and to the international media. Below are two examples issued today on Twitter by the Anti-Defamation League and by the American Jewish Committee:
Using the hashtag #ShabbatOfPeaceNotHate, the ADL is urging members of the public and influential personalities to display a message of unity against antisemitism and a demonstrate their defiance in the face of intimidation by groups that they view as extremists.
The ADL has also warned about protests and possible violence resulting from The Nation of Islam’s Saviour’s Day gathering in Chicago scheduled for Sunday and convened by one of the most out-spoken anti-semites in the USA, Louis Farrakhan.
In the past week, ADL has tracked:
Shooting attacks against Jewish people in the streets of Los Angeles.
Antisemitic demonstrations in front of a Chabad in Florida.
Increases in the distribution of antisemitic propaganda in cities across the nation.
Neo-Nazi protestors in New York City spread vile antisemitism and conspiracy theories outside the Broadway revival of Parade, the play that tells the story of the false conviction and lynching of Leo Frank.
Commenting on the increased security efforts over this coming weekend, Ben Shapiro, a popular conservative political commentator at The Daily Wire remarked that, “This has now become a regular feature of life in American Synagogues … The police are ramping up the security in my synagogue … (and) the fact that this is even necessary demonstrates the malice of this group of particular people.”
